@22 - The heart of Barcelona’s innovation district…
In 2000, as part of a vision to transform Poblenou’s industrial district into a technological hub, 200ha of land was rezoned to 22@.
More significant than the title has been the enormous public and private investment to completely renew infrastructure, transport, facilities and green spaces to compete with similar initiatives in London’s Shoreditch, Manchester, NY’s Brooklyn, Berlin and Amsterdam.
With a view to retain the area’s industrial character and heritage, large numbers of buildings have been preserved and these now co-exist with modern architectural skyscrapers to create a new CBD for Barcelona.
Fast-forward to 2019 and @22 can claim credit for Barcelona placing for the first time among the world's top 25 technological cities in a study of urban centres by real estate firm Savills.
